In the article "STEM Students Create Winning Invention" the author, Madhu Krishnamurthy, states how the students at Streamwood High School in Streamwood, Illinois made a wind-powered generator that can power a small light. The article says how the high school has entered the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest twice before and hope to win the whole thing this year.
The school had gotten $25,000 for their success in the contest last year, and are getting that again this year. The school is also getting support from the Tools & Manufacturing Association Education Foundation. The students also hope to make a mobile version of the generator to be used to charge phones. Student-centered learning was very much a part of the students' success with their project. They figured out themselves what kind of generator would work for what amount of power needed. They also found out where they would be able to put the generators and places that needed lights.
