In the article "STEM Students Create Winning Invention" the author, Madhu Krishnamurthy, states how the students at Streamwood High School in Streamwood, Illinois made a wind-powered generator that can power a small light. The article says how the high school has entered the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest twice before and hope to win the whole thing this year.
The school had gotten $25,000 for their success in the contest last year, and are getting that again this year. The school is also getting support from the Tools & Manufacturing Association Education Foundation. The students also hope to make a mobile version of the generator to be used to charge phones. Student-centered learning was very much a part of the students' success with their project. They figured out themselves what kind of generator would work for what amount of power needed. They also found out where they would be able to put the generators and places that needed lights. In this article, John Cloud talks about what it takes to be considered a genius, and how that just by observing something or noticing it, Alexander Fleming with penicillin, you could be considered a genius. He also comes to the conclusion that, "...Genius can be very hard to discern..."
I learned that you should be open when you present and just go with the flow.
The author says that geniuses think productively not reproductively while the conventional meaning of genius is anyone that has an exceptional intellect or creative thinking. Some of the shared strategies of geniuses are that they look at problems in many different ways, they make their thoughts thoughts visible, they produce, they make novel combinations, they force relationships, they think in opposites, they think metaphorically, and they prepare themselves for chance. My Genius Hour project encourages me to use these strategies because I have to think of different ways then the norm for a new design of the parking lot.
The article talks about how Genius Hour is being used across the nation, how much fun students are having with it, how teachers sold the idea to parents, and a few stories from teachers on what happened when they started doing Genius Hour in their class. What I learned from the article that can help me on my Genius Hour project is that failure is an option and is acceptable.
I plan to do research and see what the price would be to redo the Kingsford High School parking lot. This includes finding out the price of tearing up what is currently there, getting rid of certain parts of the parking lot, adding new parts if need be, and putting down new pavement. There is also planning it and figuring out what the best way would be to get school buses through and cars to park and drive through to drop-off or pickup students.
